The Age of Cloning

What is a clone?
  • A clone refers to a population of cells or    organisms derived asexually from a single ancestor
  • Dolly was the world’s FIRST mammalian clone
  • An adult mammalian cell was reprogrammed produce a complete viable organism

Cloned mammals :
  • Snuppy is the latest mammal to be cloned after sheep, mice, cats, rats, cows, goats, pigs, horses, rabbits and a mule.

Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer :
  • Dolly the sheep was created using udder cell nucleus
  • Snuppy the dog was created using ear cell nucleus
  • In the Ist human cloning cumulus - cell nuclei were used
Nine-banded armadillos :
Identical twins are clones :
BRIEF HISTORY OF CLONING :
  • 1830s Mathias Schleiden and Theodor Schwann proposed cell theory
  • 1950 Robert Briggs and Thomas King (Institute of Cancer Research in Philadelphia) did first ever nuclear transplantation in the frog Rana pipiens. Used nuclei from embryos
  • John Gurdon (England) used nuclei from intestinal cells from adults for transplantation
